Welcome to the Southside Junior High School Blog maintained by Assistant Principal, Carlos Williams.

Mr. Williams' SJH Blog

1. Get Involved!

Football and Cheerleading are going full force. Girls 6th grade basketball is just getting started. It is time to start getting involved in the school program here at SSJH!

This week students will be given the opportunity join a club here at Southside. Check out the list of clubs available here by visiting the "Clubs" link on our website. There is something for just about any area of interest. Studies show that students who get involved in school outside of the classroom general get better grades and score better on standardized tests. So I encourage every student to find a club and get involved!

3. New Technology at SSJH

We will be using a number of new technology programs here at SSJH this year. Below is a list of programs we are using and a brief description of each:

  • PowerSchool- This is the database system for Livingston Parish Public Schools. Parents and students can access this site to track their student's grades and attendance.
  • OnCourse- This is the new system we are using to maintain teacher webpages and communicate with parents, students, and the community. Stake-holders can access these page by going to our school website and clicking on "Faculty Webpages" located on the left side page menu.
  • Moodle- Some teachers will be using the Moodle program to conduct digital age class activities. Students will be able to collaborate, research, construct, and communicate in a safe and secure environment.
  • iSafe- All students will be taught a series of lessons on internet and digital age technology safety. We hope to offer classes for parents as well at some point during the year.
  • Intel Teach Program- Teachers will be trained in, and given the opportunity to use Intel technology applications in their classrooms.
  • Smart Boards- A number of our teachers will be using smart board technologies in their classrooms this year.

4. Welcome Back!

It is time once again to start another exciting and successful year at Southside Jr. High. To all our new "Bucs" we say, "Welcome." We are equally glad to see all our returning students. Each new school year is met with both eagerness and trepidation. It is extremely important to get the new school year started off on the right foot. Good habits and and positive behaviors should be set in place from the very beginning. If we all work together (students, parents, faculty, & staff) I know that we will have another successful year here at SSJH! Here are some tips to help the school year get off to a good start:

*Establish a home routine which includes the appropriate amount of sleep each night for students.

*Plan meals that support a well-balanced diet. Make sure not to forget breakfast.

*Set up a quite place in your home for study and homework.

*Consider placing time limits on activities such as internet, phone, and TV usage.

*Check teacher webpages on a regular basis to keep track of what is going on in classes and visit the school webpage to be made aware of upcoming events and important information.
